Myth #1: Acai berries act as strong appetite suppressants

mythbuster-acai-berry-dietThis claim is based entirely on no truth. There have never been any scientific studies carried out on the acai berry which would either prove or disprove this claim.

“But my best friend swears this is true!” you say. If that’s the case, please consider the placebo effect. This happens in cases where patients are given a medication they think is real and they take it feel better. It is completely involuntary and the patient perceives the medication as having had a tremendous effect on them. It is nevertheless an effect which has been manufactured in their mind. The actual fact of the matter is that acai berries contain no active ingredient known to act as an appetite suppressant in humans.

Myth #2: Acai will flatten your stomach by speeding up your metabolism

This is false. The only way to flatten your stomach is through vigorous exercise such as sit-ups or leg lifts. This small berry may be able to help you in some great ways but flattening your stomach is not one of them.

Fact: Acai berries contain many antioxidants

This is absolutely true. It is a known fact that antioxidants fight against things called “free radicals” which are known to cause diseases such as heart disease and certain types of cancers. They are also responsible for the generalized breakdown of human cells in the body. Scientific studies have shown that acai berries contain high levels of antioxidants. But ALL berries are high in antioxidants: blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. When they are in season, these kinds of berries can be purchased at your local grocery store for much less than  you’d spend on a supply of acai berries. You can pick themselves if you live in a region where they are grown and freeze them for use during the rest of the year.

Will using Acai Berries Help Me with my Weight Loss Plan?

acai-berry-diet-planWhile it is definitely appealing to put all your faith in one particular tool when it comes to weight loss, the fact of the matter is that aside from their high levels of antioxidants, no evidence has been found which can definitively link acai berries to fighting obesity. The antioxidant levels found in acai berries are called anthocyanins which are also present in red wine: one of the reason a glass of red wine per day is now recommended for everyone.

Because acai berries fall into the category of diet supplements, they are not regulated by the FDA so you will have no guarantees about the purity, strength or potency of any acai berry products you may purchase. In fact, the only role that acai berries play in helping combat obesity has to do with the antioxidants they contain and their ability to cope with and fight off the inflammation which is usually associated with obesity. They will not specifically target any fat deposits in your body. Eating other antioxidant rich foods would have the exact same effect in terms of dealing with inflammation. In fact, one of the biggest problems with acai berry juice which you may purchase is that it is often loaded with sugar and that will definitely not help you when it comes to losing weight.

So, like with any other product which claims to “do it all” there are upsides and downsides to using acai berry products for your weight loss. It will cost you a ton of money that could better be spent on hiring a personal trainer to help you establish a workout regimen. They have no FDA supervision which means you get what you get and you have no idea (really) what you are ingesting. A dangerous practice when purchasing edible products from countries outside the United States. They have the potential to harbour a lot of hidden sugars which will work against any weight loss measures you have put into place.

When it comes to losing weight, you’re much better off if you can know and understand that there will be NO quick fix. You didn’t gain the weight overnight. You will not lose it overnight. It’s that simple. It takes planning and determination and usually the support of family and friends. But if you’re determined you will be able to do it and you’ll feel much better for it!
