Liquid Diets For Weight Loss – How To Find a Safe One?

What Are Liquid Diets?

liquiddietMost people have at least one friend who has been on a liquid diet. Most people who do them, swear by them. But what exactly are they and do they really work?

The basic liquid diet will control a person’s caloric intake because all their calories will be consumed in liquid form. Different liquid diets work on different principles. Some of these diets consist entirely of fluids. These can be delivered in the form of vegetable and/or fruit juices. Some are delivered in the form of shakes. These are designed to replace each of your meals and the liquids are taken between three and four times per day. Different liquid diets are your basic “do it yourself” diet, Some are sold over the counter while others are plans which are supervised by medical personnel and are usually delivered in a hospital setting with a physician overseeing the patient.

Some liquid diets only replace one or two meals per day. The meals which are replaced are usually either breakfast or lunch. These kind of diets allow the dieter to consume a healthy, well-balanced meal at dinnertime. Some of these liquid diets include protein snack bars which are eaten in between meals.

To the average overweight person, the concept of being able to lose a fair amount of weight with only a minimal amount of effort seems like a dream come true. The advertising for these kind of diets usually promise that you will be able to literally drink your way to a new, slimmer, trimmer you in no time at all. To the more discerning dieter, these claims seem just too good to be true and are usually considered with more than a pound or two of salt. As well they should be.

Okay, but do they really work?

These diets contain a very reduced number of calories. So, the principle is a simple one: if you take in fewer calories than you burn off in a given day, you will drop a few pounds. What you may soon discover, though, is this weight loss may only be temporary. As soon as you revert back to your old eating habits, you will likely regain the weight you lost and then some. By drastically reducing the number of calories you take in during a given week, your metabolism simply slows down in an effort to conserve energy. Much of the initial weight loss might in fact be water weight.

Some of these liquid diets do have a better long term track record than others. Research has shown that a liquid diet that also allows the person to consume some food has more success than those that are solely based on  liquids alone.

Are liquid diets a safe alternative?

liquid-diet-planIf you are going to go ahead and put yourself on a liquid diet you will want to make sure that you are receiving the proper balance of nutrients. A liquid diet which only gives you between 400 to 800 calories a day will most likely be significantly lacking in the proper nutrients. This type of diet should only be used under proper supervision from a physician. If your liquid diet is missing many nutrients, you are at risk for some serious side effects which can include but are not limited to gallstones, hair loss and fatigue.

Many liquid diets are also lacking in enough fiber which may cause to become seriously constipated. This will also be compounded because you will not be eating enough fruit or vegetables. As well, if you are not consuming enough protein in your diet, you may lose a fair bit of muscle mass.

How Can I Find a Safe Liquid Diet That Will Work For Me?

If you are seriously considering going on a liquid diet, first discuss this with your physician. Some people especially pregnant women or women who are lactating or a person who is an insulin-dependent diabetic should never go on a liquid diet. Once your doctor has given you the okay to pursue with a liquid diet your next question should be to ask for a referral to a registered dietician.

At your first meeting with your dietician, they will go over your diet completely with you to ensure that you will be getting enough calories and total nutrition. They might recommend that you take a multi-vitamin each day while you’re on your liquid diet.

Before you plunge headlong into your liquid diet, you should first carefully read all the labels and especially make sure that you will receiving all the daily recommended vitamins and minerals as outlined by the USDA.

You will also want to make sure that you will not regain all the weight you’ve lost once you return to eating solid food. This means that it will important to choose a diet that is not so low in calories  that it will be unsustainable and also that you choose a diet that will allow you to eat at least one meal per day. You will be much more successful if you choose a liquid diet that will teach you better, healthier eating habits along your weight loss journey.

If you are able to locate a liquid diet that allows you to include at least one meal a day in your food plan, then chances are you will have a fair bit of success with it. Just remember, though that you will need to at least modify some of your eating habits or you may very well see all the weight come back on fairly soon after you’ve resumed eating solid food.

Because food and eating are such complicated issues with multifaceted roots of dysfunction for many people, it is important to facilitate a healthy relationship with your food. Being on a liquid diet will not be end of your struggle. More likely, this path will end up being the beginning of your struggle. Whatever you choose, be courageous and don’t allow yourself to become discouraged too quickly. Weight loss is possible. Try to remember that it does take time. Rome was not built in a day, nor were all the extra pounds you’ve accumulated put on overnight.

What’s the Deal with Macrobiotics Diet? – An Inside Look!

Do you have a friend who has recently announced, “I’ve gone macrobiotic!” She is likely enthusiastic beyond belief and you are left sitting there wondering, “What’s the deal with a macrobiotic diet?” So, almost everyone knows about the Hindu prohibition against eating beef. This is one example of how a religion is tied to a way of eating. Judaism is another key example in terms of keeping “kosher” which literally means ritually correct. But did you know that macrobiotic diets are also tied to a form of religion as well? Probably not.

What Is A Macrobiotic Diet?

Macrobiotic-Diet-ReviewMacrobiotic diets go much further than just providing the body with basic nutrition and food that is good for you. Following a macrobiotic diet is to take on a new way of living in a very comprehensive manner. People who follow a macrobiotic diet feel that it leads them to the truth as they develop their personal compass as a way to lead to self-discovery. A macrobiotic lifestyle reaches beyond nourishing the body through healthy food choices. Macrobiotics is an entirely new way of relating to food.

People who follow a this type of diet will be quick to tell you that it is a way of life, not just a diet. The overall idea behind it is a sound one, and one that you would might want to apply to your life. As a combination of Zen Buddhism and Western vegetarian diets, macrobiotic diets center around eating an organic, natural, plant based diet in an effort to have a Zen-like connection between yourself and the food you are consuming.  The word “macrobiotic” actually comes from the Greek words for “long/great life.”

A macrobiotic diet will focus on the kinds of food which are typically absent from most diets in North America. You will be eating more whole, natural food such as beans and vegetables. Adding these alone would be beneficial for almost everyone. Be warned, though, adopting a completely macrobiotic diet can be very difficult and will require major shifts in your lifestyle. Eating in restaurants will become virtually impossible something most people are unwilling to give up.

I know you might be thinking, “Yeah, so what?” but try to stay with here just a little bit longer. The balance of yin and yang are balanced by different types of foods. Sour, sweet, salty, sharp, and bitter all characterize different foods that you will eat. Yin foods are things that are sweet, cold and passive. Yang foods, on the other hand, are salty, aggressive, and hot. Anything that falls too far to one end of this spectrum are not allowed. Originally, the goal was to restrict it more and more until you were left with a diet of brown rice, but now it is closer to a spiritual vegetarian diet. Regardless of how you feel about vegetarian diets, you can’t doubt that, if nothing else, they make you feel amazing once your body adjusts.

What Type of Food is Included?

First off, meat is included, so don’t worry too much about that. I’ve heard it described as “flexitarian” because you can eat meat occasionally, although you still have to follow the same kind of practice as far as choosing your products.

Everything should be unprocessed, natural, and ideally raw. It is also important to cook everything in a traditional way. Baking, steaming, and boiling are all fine, but don’t even think about frying anything! Grains, vegetables, soy, soups, beans, nuts, fruits, seeds, and anything else that falls into this category is allowed. The experts discourage vitamins and supplements, but if you need to balance out certain nutrients, you shouldn’t hesitate to add them to your diet.

Typically, your daily intake should look something like this:

  • 50% – Whole Grains – with NO refined sugars added
  • 30% – Vegetables – fresh and uncooked when possible
  • 5% – Beans
  • 15% – Lean Meat, Nuts, Fruitmacrobiotic_diet_food_pyramid

What Are The Benefits?

I can’t say whether or not this diet is going to balance your energy between yin and yang, but aside from the promises of better health, it also shows promises in terms of weight loss. People on this kind of diet say that they feel stronger, more energetic, have better immune systems, and generally have a better outlook on life. Call that balancing an ancient energy if you want, but the truth is that it is a great feeling.

Fat loss is easy with this kind of restriction on portions and available foods. You still have to be careful, though, since the amount of grains that you are eating can make it easy to go overboard and gain weight. As long as you stick to the complex carbohydrates that you are supposed to eat there isn’t any reason to think that you won’t lose plenty of weight.

An added bonus that a lot of people attribute a macrobiotic diet to a spiritual union with the universe. I can’t give you any information about whether or not you will have this feeling, but it stands to reason that you will feel more connected with the world when you are eating natural, whole foods and taking in foods in their actual form, instead of a over-processed reproductions of a product. A large part of eastern religions are based around a communion with the natural world and I think this sounds like a great way to do just that.

Are There Any Risks?

One of the biggest concerns that I have encountered when talking about the macrobiotic diet is the lack of protein. There isn’t a great deal included here, but as long as you make sure to get an adequate amount every day you should be just fine. This can be in the form of red meat once or twice a week, fish or weven protein bars.

Should You Try It?

This diet is not for everyone but if you think it sounds like it may be feasible for you, then by all means, go ahead and give it a whirl. You may not be into the spiritual aspects of it but that’s fine. It is a perfectly good way of eating if you can manage it. Many cancer survivors adopt a macrobiotic diet as a way to help keep themselves in remission.

Should You Switch to Low Sodium Diet?

Salt. Everyone loves it. If you have ever enjoyed a good meal, there is a good chance a healthy amount of salt was involved. Too much of it, though, is going to cause a host of other problems that will dramatically reduce your ability to enjoy good food that is seasoned with it. Listen, I’m not going to tell you that you have to stay away from salt for forever, but you should cut back to a reasonable amount in order to lose weight and live a long, healthy life.

What Is Sodium?

saltSodium chloride is salt, just to make sure that I’m being clear. It’s vital to your body. So vital, in fact, that it was one of the most profitable trades in the ancient world. When you take in sodium, your body uses it to regulate the water content of your body and send signals to your nervous system.

As the world progressed and salt intake grew as well, doctors began to notice a pattern. Too much is going to lead to high blood pressure, dizziness, muscle cramps, electrolyte imbalances, stroke, and even stomach cancer.

What Is A Low Sodium Diet Plan?

A low sodium diet is exactly what it sounds like. A diet that is low in sodium. Reducing your sodium intake to about 1,500mg a day will have a huglow-sodium-diete impact on your life. 2,000mg is the limit that most medical professionals agree on, but many people get 2-3 times that much!

To cut back, you are going to be eating foods that are rich in nutrients. Fruits, whole grains, nuts, vegetables, fish and dairy products. These all have everything that you need, but no excess sodium or things that will cause you to store fat. On the other hand, you should stay away from the following at all costs: table salt, soy sauce, bouillon cubes, sun dried tomatoes, bacon, snack foods, pickles, and salt water fish.

Sample Meal Plan

Breakfast:

  • 1 medium sized whole-wheat bagel with 3 tablespoons of peanut butter
  • 1 large orange
  • 1 cup black coffee

Lunch:

  • Spinach salad:
    • 4 cups of leaves
    • 1 whole pear (sliced)
    • 1/2 cup sliced oranges
    • 1/2 cup almonds
    • 3 tablespoons of red wine vinaigrette (reduced fat)

Dinner:

  • 3oz baked cod
  • 1/2 cup of brown rice
  • 1/2 cup of steamed green beans
  • 1 small sized sourdough roll
  • 1/2 cup fresh berries

Sounds like a standard diet, doesn’t it? In reality, however, the kind of benefits that you’ll get from this switch go far beyond weight loss.

Benefits of Low Sodium Diet

A lowering sodium in your diet is going to help you lose weight, of course, but it does so much more. The weight loss comes largely from the healthy foods that you will be eating. Foods that are high in salt are also the same foods that cause you to gain weight. Snack foods, soda, soy sauce covered fried rice. These are all things that will stop your weight loss dead in its tracks.

In addition, you are going to extend your life. Heart disease is one of the most deadly things known to man at this day and age. For example, for every 1,000mg that you cut out, a measurable drop in blood pressure is possible. 4mm Hg is the average drop. Even if you have normal blood pressure, this is going to make a big impact. Your body will also be better able to manage your water, face less muscle cramps, and reduce your risk of stomach cancer.

Are There Any Risks?

I haven’t been able to find any. Lowering your sodium intake only helps your body, not harm it. There is a risk, however, if you lower your sodium intake too much. It isn’t something that should be avoided at all costs, just regulated. Reducing your intake too low will cause many of the same problems, including water intoxication. You are never at much of a risk for drinking too much water, except when you don’t have enough salt in your system to regulate it properly.

Reading Food Labels

food-labelReading food labels is an important part of starting a low sodium diet. The US government created a standard design that is found on all food products.

First, look at the serving size printed on the label, this is the amount that is usually eaten by a normal sized adult. You can trick yourself into thinking things are healthier than they are if you don’t look at the serving size.

Now, take a look at the sodium content. If there is less than 140mg, this is considered a low sodium food. Remember that you are trying to get 1,500mg a day. Eat according to that.

This is also important because you’ll be shocked at the amount of sugar in foods that you eat when you actually look at the nutrition facts. The carbohydrate amount can make something seem healthy, until you realize that it is actually filled to the brim with sugars.

Ending Remarks

So, can you benefit from a low sodium diet? The answer is a resounding, YES! Salt is one of the most problematic things that is a part of the modern diet. Cutting out a good deal of it will absolutely change your life for the better.

Coconut Oil for Weight Loss – Why It’s a Bad Idea!

What is Coconut oil?

coconut-oilCoconut oil is derived from the kernel of coconuts which have matured. It is used in various different applications, among them medicine, food and certain types of industry. It oxidizes very slowly because it is very high in saturated fat. Because of this it can be stored for almost two years without becoming rancid (or spoiled).

Ask any health professional you know about the dangers of saturated fat. Saturated fats are any type of oil or lubricant that becomes solid when cold. Butter and lard are just two examples of this. But coconut oil is another. Saturated fat is responsible for clogging  up your arteries and its consumption is the major cause of heart disease. For years and years, the surgeon general and others have been warning about the dangers of saturated fats and urging people to move away from their consumption.

Coconut Oil Diet – Why I Would Advice Against it?

This is the main reason that I am so surprised (and a bit concerned) to learn that a new diet called the Coconut Oil diet is making its way around the internet. I see this as a very dangerous fad one that you should certainly steer clear of.

The promoters of the Coconut Oil diet claim that it works because it is a “healthy fat”. This is blatantly untrue. The healthy fats that one should incorporate into one’s diet are olive oil and fats from things like almonds and avocados. This has undergone intense scientific scrutiny and the winner in the “fat wars” are olive oil and avocado oil hands down.

Historically, humans have consumed different kinds of fat since mankind first emerged from the muck of creation. Thousands of years ago, humans learned that fats provided many things aside from an insulating barrier. But in fact, every human needs a certain amount of fat in their diet which is the main reason that people who adopt an entirely fat-free diet eventually find themselves in deep, deep trouble.

Our myelin sheaths which protect our nerves are partly made up of fat. The myelin sheaths need this fat in order to help the nerves send signals back and forth to the brain. As well, our brains are also made up of a great deal of fat. What these human fats are NOT composed of, however, is saturated fats such as those found in coconut oil.

Is Dr Oz Promoting This Diet?

coconut-oil-dietOne of the most disturbing things about this diet is that Dr. Mehmet Oz himself is promoting it as an effective weight loss product. Dr. Oz is a cardiologist and during his career has no doubt seen the ravages of diets high in saturated fat. So, the only conclusion I can come to is that he is either promoting this product as a way to drum up new business for himself or because he has turned into such a media whore that he just can’t help himself. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that he is an investor in a company that is selling coconut oil.

The makers and seller of coconut oil products will also not tell you about the damage harvesting coconuts has done to the environment where the trees grow. Much of the land in these areas has become completely denuded which leads to serious issues with erosion. Because of this, much of the good, arable soil eventually washes away which causes the inhabitants of the region great difficulties in growing other crops.

People who promote the coconut oil diet will, like most promoters of other unhealthy diets, tell that there have been numerous scientific studies to prove that it is beneficial. In fact, they will generally cite a study carried out at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee in the pediatrics department which studied a grand total of ten male “volunteers” for a total of one week. Now granted, this was a double-blind study. But one week is not enough time to collect enough data to conduct any kind of “study”. This is evidence made to measure.

Another study conducted at McGill University followed 28 overweight  men for one month. Again, a study made to measure. They do say, however, that when we “eat sensibly” using this type of oil can be healthy. I guess that can be true if you are not eating a lot of fried foods. But then again, that’s true of almost any oil, I think. Even eating fried foods cooked in olive oil is not so good for you.

So, I think the answer is a pretty similar one when it comes to the Coconut Diet. If you are really only trying to lose, do yourself and your heart a favour and just eat your veggies and fruit. Don’t clog up your veins unnecessarily with a lot of saturated fat that your body doesn’t need. This is really true if heart disease runs in your family. Why step onto the tracks in the way of a speeding train? You simply don’t need it. Stick to your olive oil and you’ll be much better off. And you’ll probably lose the same amount of weight over the same amount of time.

The Insider Guide to Juice Fasting & Weight Loss

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sauntered my past the juicers at Wal-Mart without ever stopping to look at them. The little miracle machines have recently been receiving a lot of press coverage and are becoming more and more popular every day. In fact, I have one friend who has been juicing for about a year in order to bring her husband’s Hepatitis C under control with absolutely remarkable results. So, I know something is going on with this thing. Having the ability to turn almost any kind of food into juice makes this product very versatile. You will be amazed, like my friend has been, at the results you will see in a very short period of time. But I’ll bet you didn’t know that juicing and something call juice fasting could also be used for weight loss. Though I would never suggest you embark on anything crazy, let me fill you in on some of the facts about using juice nutrition.

Why Juice?

juice-fastingUsing juice nutrition can be a tremendously powerful detoxification tool. It is also, unbeknownst to most people, a great way to lose some weight. When you are doing juice fasting, you are consuming a great number of nutrients in the form of freshly squeezed fruits and vegetables but you are not taking in any solid foods. This is such a powerful tool because when your body is not trying to process solid food, it is able to divert its energy toward cleansing itself and eliminating old, dispensable tissue.

Though most people don’t realize it, our bodies require a great deal of energy just to digest the food we take in each day. Scientists estimate that approximately 30% of all the energy a person uses each day is used simply to process food and digest it. If you are eating meat and lots of carbohydrates, you will need even more energy to process and digest those meals — much more so than it would take your body to process and digest meals that are made up solely of fruits and vegetables.

Aside from providing your body with a lot of energy with which to cleanse itself and engage in some productive healing, juice fasting is also a very quick and easy way to lose weight.

Juice fasting is beneficial for weight loss because your liver, your prime detoxification organ, is also your essential organ that deals primarily with burning fat. So as you detoxify your body, you are allowing your liver to carry out its primary function, that of burning fat.

Are Fasts Healthy?

juices-for-weight-lossIn this sense? Yes. Periodic fasts are great for getting your body back on track after an unhealthy diet has ravaged it. This isn’t even technically a fast, though.

With a juice fast, you are going to stay away from solid food, but you are going to be getting plenty of nutrition from all of the fruits and vegetables that you are going to be taking in. In fact, you could actually get a higher level of nutrition while still losing weight since your focusing on these nutrient dense products.

What Kind Of Juices?

Any food that you can eat raw, can be juiced. Vegetables are the most common, along with juices. Even things like raisins can be juiced, although you’ll have to soak them in water, which even then can’t be relied on for much volume wise.

Shopping ahead of time for a diet like this is important. I’ll show you 3 specific recipes that I’m crazy about, but here’s a quick list of foods that are good to look for before you start your fast.

  • Apples
  • Cucumbers
  • Blueberries
  • Grapes
  • Kale
  • Oranges
  • Lemons
  • Celery
  • Tomatoes
  • Beets
  • Carrots
  • Spinach
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Pineapples
  • Grapefruits

And the list goes on. Any of these make great ingredients for your juicing diet and you should take a look at some that you don’t normally eat. You’d be surprised at how great a glass of juice can taste, even when it is filled with things that you normally wouldn’t want anything to do with.

What Would A Day Look Like?

  • Breakfast: 2 Apples, 1 cup blueberries, 2 leaves of kale, 1 cucumber, 2 cups of grapes and a pinch of ginger
  • Lunch: 1 cup of spinach, 2 cups of romaine lettuce, 1 green apple, 1/2 lemon, 2 stalks of celery, and 1 cup of kale, 1/2 peeled lemon
  • Dinner: 1 large beet, 1 green apple, 1 inch slice of ginger, 2 large carrots, 1/2 peeled lemon

That doesn’t seem like a lot of food, and it isn’t. You are drastically cutting your calories down, but you are only taking in liquid nutrients, if you look at it that way.

Results

lose-weight-with-juices10 pounds in two weeks is not at all uncommon. The kind of vital nutrients that you are taking in turn your body into a fat burning machine. Theoretically, the fat loss could continue for any length of time, but you might find it hard to keep up with a juice fast for any extended period of time.

I noticed other benefits the most, though. You feel electric. A new kind of energy takes over your body and you feel better than you ever have before.

The Final Word

While juice fasting may not be for everyone, this is something you should definitely consider. You will most likely find that it will be very hard to avoid food while you’re fasting. You will probably experience some serious caffeine withdrawal if you’re like me and love you morning cup of Joe. But thousands of people have lost tons of weight using this method.

Special K Diet Plan – A Few Things You Didn’t Know About This Diet!

What is the Special K diet plan?

special-k Have you seen the ads on television telling you that if you follow the Special K Diet plan that you can lose up to 6 lbs in just fourteen days? It just sounds almost too good to be true, doesn’t it? Yet, according to the makers of Special K, Kellogg’s cereals, if you follow their diet plan which means eating their cereal products for breakfast and lunch each day along with a regular meal for dinner, you stand to lose up to six pounds in just two weeks.

Well, to say that I was skeptical at first would probably be the understatement of the 21st century. But I started to do some research on this diet and discovered some very interesting things about it.

This diet allows relatively quick weight loss by utilizing portion control at two daily meals and at regular snack times. It does not, however, give any recommendations as to what should be included in or the portion sizes of the third meal, dinner. It is important to realize as well that if the dinner meal is full of fat and excess carbohydrates that any potential weight loss achieved from following the diet at breakfast and lunch will be negated. This means that you will not have lost much weight by the time the two weeks is up.

This diet has been specially designed as a quick fix. It is not intended to be followed on a long-term basis. You will find no recommendations from any health practitioners or dieticians in terms of what to eat and how to eat it. The only information you will find will be contained on the panels of the cereal boxes themselves and on the website for the product, Special K cereal. There is also a message group which operates on Yahoo and features a blog written by athlete Gabrielle Reece.

There is nothing inherently special about either Special K products at all except for the fact that the majority of them are made using whole grains. It is a known fact that eating whole grains can help you feel fuller for longer.

People who decide to take the Special K Challenge, as it is called, should view it as the beginning to following a more healthy eating plan and gaining a healthier lifestyle because of that. They should view those initial six pounds they lose as the kickstarter motivating factor which can get them going.

What can you actually eat when you’re doing this Challenge?

special-k-diet-planThe Challenge itself is relatively simple and easy to follow. It incorporates foods that most people have easy access to and enjoy quite a bit. Dieters are encouraged to choose from a great variety of Special K products such as the different cereals they make, bars, shakes and enhanced water products.

If you opt to use their cereals or bar products, be sure you read the labels and choose only those which are high in fiber and protein. These additions will keep you fuller longer and help ease any hunger pangs. Also make sure that you are only eating the recommended serving size and weigh and/or measure your food.

How the Special K Challenge actually works?

This diet works so well because it literally slashes calorie intake by about ½. So, think of it this way, if you all of a sudden started eating a breakfast each day which consisted of between 100 and 250 calories rather than your normal bacon, eggs, toast and orange juice, you think you’d lose weight, right? That is what this diet plan is doing. It is substituting your normal breakfast of bacon, eggs, toast and oj for a bowl of cereal and skim milk. Simple as a pied. Diet pie, that is.

The diet is also extremely simple and easy to follow meaning that it will be easy to maintain for the two weeks which will be needed. Giving dieters the option to choose their own third meal (dinner) makes the diet more acceptable to most people and they are more likely to see it through to its completion.

Yes, but what do the experts say about this diet plan?

Despite the fact that this diet is simple to use and encourages dieters to eat food that is easily accessible to them, scientists have not been overwhelming in their praise of it. They say that the diet is too low in fiber, protein and does not incorporate enough fruits and vegetables. They also criticize the fact that no exercise component is either included or encouraged.

I don’t see any harm at all in following something like the Special K diet for a few weeks provided that you limit it to the two weeks which are suggested. If you use this diet as a springboard and a jumping off place for a bigger lifestyle change, then this might be just the ticket for easing into it without a big hoo-hah.

It is important to remember that when most people first start to diet what they are initially losing is usually water weight. You might also lose about 1 to 2 pounds per week when you first start but this will soon plateau to a more reasonable self-sustaining weight loss.

You can probably expect you will be more hungry than usual on this diet and you will therefore need to wary of the temptation to cheat. Be sure you keep lots of healthy snacks on  hand if you’re going to follow this diet.

Breakfast Smoothies for Weight Loss (4 Delicious Recipes Inside)

I’ve told you about smoothies for weight loss. You have read all of my posts, right? There are plenty of different smoothie recipes that can help you lose weight, feel better about your life, and have more energy than you ever thought possible. For breakfast, though, there are specific things that you should know. Getting the right blend of vitamins and nutrients first thing in the morning is one of the best ways to take care of yourself and take your weight loss to a new level. Follow me.

What’s So Different About Breakfast?

breakfast-smoothiesBreakfast is a special meal in your day. Your body has just been asleep for (hopefully) 8 hours and been working overtime to repair the damage of the day before. That can take up a lot of energy and nutrients, which you might not have supplied. This is when your body is going to be starving for nutrients. To get off on the right start, you need a more intense version of the smoothies that you would normally use to replace meals.

Protein and healthy fats are vital first thing when you wake up. Carbohydrates can be important, but if you are trying to lose weight, you should focus on the other two. Many smoothies fall short by having too much sugar, or not enough fat. Both of those should be avoided when you are having breakfast.

Smoothie Ideas

Alright, so now you know what you need. What should you include in your breakfast smoothies to help you lose weight? Like I said, lots of protein and fat.

The protein can come from two sources, powdered protein or nuts. The nuts will also give you some of the fat content that you are looking for. 20-40 grams should be the best for this purpose, but if you go towards the higher end, the powdered protein can be hard to mix right and you’ll end up with a grainy smoothie.

As far as fat, there are a couple of options here as well. Coconut oil is very common and can actually give you a mental boost as well, which is great for getting your head in the game right when you wake up. Nuts, nut butters, and hemp oil also work great. You have to make sure to put the right amount of fat into your smoothie, however, because it is easy to add too much and end up running to the bathroom every ten minutes for a few hours. A couple of tablespoons should be enough in many cases.

What about fruit? Well, the fruit that you are going to be using should be tasty, but not too sugary. Stick to just a couple, as well. They are basically going to serve to give you a bit of carbohydrates, but not overpower anything else. You’ll see how it works in my examples.

This one doesn’t have protein, but cleanses your system first thing in the morning. It isn’t great later in the day, but for breakfast it is important.

  • 6 Chopped Romaine Leaves
  • 4 Copped Leaves Of Kale
  • 1/2 cup of Fresh Parsley
  • 1/2 Cup of Pineapple
  • 1/2 Cup of Mango
  • 1 Piece of ginger
  • 2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil

Avocado/Spinach/Kale Superfood SuperSmoothie

  • 1/2 Cup Avocado
  • 1/2 Cup of Spinach
  • 1/2 cup of Berries
  • 1/3 cup of Greek Yogurt
  • 1 Tablespoon of Honey
  • 1/2 Scoop of Unflavored Whey Protein

Tips:

  • healthy-smoothies-weight-lossAdd or remove protein depending on how the texture seems. Add as much as you can without it seeming grainy of affecting the taste. That can take some trial and error, but the more protein you get first thing in the morning, the more weight you can lose.
  • Avoid the temptation to add sugar filled yogurt. Yes, yogurt tastes good. Yes, fruit on the bottom contains fruit. No, you shouldn’t be using that here. Greek yogurt is your only option when it comes to breakfast smoothies for weight loss.
  • Add cayenne pepper for a metabolism boost. If you can handle it, add some cayenne pepper to heat up your body and get your metabolism running. Too much will be easy to notice, but find just the right amount that works for you.

At the end of the day, or perhaps the beginning, smoothies are a fantastic idea for breakfast. When you start using smoothies for weight loss, it is always tempting to switch one out for any meal of the day. There isn’t any problem with that, but for the best results you can’t beat having one for breakfast, especially one like I showed you. I was never a morning person until I started having smoothies that were packed with protein and fats to get me up, moving, and clear headed.

3 Diet Plans that Work Fast

Everyone wants to lose weight more quickly. I was never satisfied with losing just 2 pounds a week and wanted the secret to fast weight loss. No one wants to wait a year to be at the weight they want to be at. There are options now that truly can help you lose the weight. You don’t have to try unproven gimmick diets anymore, I’m going to give you a few that I have tried and had success with. Don’t just take my word for it, though, these are diets that upwards of a million people have had huge successes with.

The Atkins Diet

atkinsI was wary of the Atkins diet for years because of the popularity of it. I figured, if this much money is spent on advertising, how effective can it be? Shouldn’t the results speak for themselves?

The truth of the matter is that the Atkins diet really is an effective regimen for losing weight quickly. For the first two weeks of the diet you are in an introductory phase that will have you only eating 10grams of carbohydrates a day. All of those will come from vegetables and quickly put your body into a ketogenic state that will have you burning fat rather than relying on carbohydrates.

After that phase, you will add more carbohydrates each week until you start gaining weight again. For those two weeks, though, you will rapidly lose weight and see incredible results. I dropped 10 pounds in those first two weeks.

The BulletProof Diet

Bulletproof-dietDave Asprey created the Bulletproof Diet and it is one diet that absolutely blew my mind with both the results and other benefits. With the extreme version of the diet that I’m going to show you it is possible to lose almost 10 pounds a week! It won’t be easy for everyone, though.

For two weeks, you will be having Bulletproof coffee, and nothing else. Bulletproof coffee consists of blending two cups of strong black coffee with two tablespoons of coconut oil and two tablespoons of butter. Stick with me. This cup of healthy fats will keep you full and energetic, despite not having any other nutrients. The caffeine will also boost your metabolism for six hours, since the fats slow the absorption. Having two cups a day will make sure that your body is in a ketogenic state similar to the Atkins diet, but in a much more intense way.

After that period, if you like, you can continue to have Bulletproof coffee for breakfast and then eat regular food between 2 and 8pm. During that time you should avoid carbohydrates, though, and eat as much fat and protein as you like.

The benefit of this diet isn’t just rapid weight loss, though. A ketogenic diet like this is going to keep your mind clear and focused throughout the day. It is even being tested as a way to help Alzheimer’s patients. I used this diet and finally got the motivation to take care of my work in a way that I was never capable of before.

Raw Food Cleanse

raw-food-cleanseRaw food is becoming much more popular. I felt amazing after doing a week long cleanse with raw food, although many have a hard time sticking to it the results are worth it.

Cooking destroys a lot of the nutrients that are in food. Eating fruits and vegetables in their natural, raw state makes sure that you get all of the benefits that you possibly can. Smoothies, juices, soups, and salads will be your daily life for the next week.

It takes effort to make it through. Plan out a week of meals and buy everything that you are going to need. Make sure that you have a good blender to make smoothies and shakes with. A juicer is ideal, but many people don’t have access to one.

For example, a kale shake with various other leafy vegetables will give you much more energy in the morning than a cup of coffee would

The problem is that you start craving food a couple of days in. Even if you are getting plenty of nutrients, your mind still tells you that you just need a Coke, a candy bar, or a large portion of of beef. For a lot of people, that is why this kind of diet isn’t possible on the long term. A cleanse like this will help to remove toxins from your body, drop up to 10 pounds of fat, and feel better than ever. Even if you go back to your normal diet, you will feel great for a while now that your body is rejuvenated.

Which One?

The one you choose is going to depend on how much self control you have. Any fast diet is going to have a lot of restrictions, but some of these are extreme if you are used to eating loads of refined sugars and junk food. Take a look at your life and the way you eat. Any choice will help you a lot, but you have to pick the one that will fit the best with your life or else you will never stick with it.

Weight Loss Diets for Men – Which one will you Choose?

As a man, you have a lot of emphasis placed on the way that you look. In most cases, this is going to mean that you probably want to get rid of that beer belly that you’ve been hanging onto for the past few years, or more. There are all kinds of diets floating around the internet and it’s hard to know just what you’re looking at. I’ve tried a couple of the diets that I am going to show you, but as a man, there are extra benefits that you are going to get from these kinds of protocols.

The Bulletproof Diet

Bulletproof-dietWhen it comes to angry responses on the internet, very few diets are more associated with them than the Bulletproof Diet from Dave Asprey. The diet centers around the combined use of Bulletproof Coffee and a paleo like diet.

Bulletproof coffee is a blend of coffee, grass fed butter, and coconut oil. This combination supplies your body with healthy fats for fuel, a steady stream of caffeine, and an incredible amount of focus. Stay with me, I was wary of that idea at first. You then eat only between 2pm and 8pm. During that time you can eat as much protein and fat as you like, but should avoid any processed carbohydrates. You will create a ketogenic state that tells your body to run off of fat rather than carbohydrates. Listen, I know you’ll be hungry when you wake up in the morning, that is what the cup of fat is for when you have your coffee.

If you attempt to only have bulletproof coffee and fast the rest of the time, you can jumpstart it and lose up to 1 pound a day in some cases! In general, though, you can expect to lose 2-3 pounds a week, optimize your hormones, and build muscle without the risk of adding fat as well.

The Paleo Diet

Paleo-DietWhen it comes to manly diets, the Paleo diet is the one that usually comes to mind. What is more masculine than going back to the diet that a caveman would have had? Back before Cheerios and Coca Cola, men were tall, athletic, and muscular. My, my how times have changed!

When you get started with the Paleo diet you will completely get rid of any sugar in your diet. No sugar, no grains, no processed foods.

Here is what you can eat:

Meat: All grass fed – Chicken, turkey, beef, wild fish, duck

Eggs

Vegetables: Any vegetable that isn’t fried

Oils: Olive, coconut, avocado

Fruit: Any fruit is OK, but you should still limit them since they contain sugar.

Nuts: Almonds, peanuts,Brazil nuts

You can eat as much of any of these foods as you like. Without any foods to turn to fat, you can eat all you want and not worry about gaining weight. In fact, this is perfect if you are trying to build muscle, but would rather not pack on fat as well.

Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is similar to the Bulletproof Diet. Personally, I have had a hard time with intermittent fasting, but many men find that this yields some almost unbelievable results. Take a look at these different IF protocols:

  • Leangains: For many men, Leangains is a godsend. This is designed specifically for muscle building workouts and can help you bulk up without getting fat. The idea is to fast for 16 hours a day. Nothing but coffee, tea, and other zero calorie beverages. During your 8 hour eating window you can eat as much protein as possible, but on days that you workout you can add carbohydrates. Those carbohydrates are replaced with healthy fats on the off days. You will also eat immeweightloss-diets-for-mendiately after your workout, a meal which should makeup 50% of your entire daily intake.
  • Eat Stop Eat: Eat Stop Eat is a great option for people who eat a healthy diet, but want to have some of the benefits of IF. One day a week, a day that you don’t workout or do too much physical activity, you will fast for 24 hours. If you eat your last meal at 8pm, you cannot eat until the following day at 8pm. I recommend having your meal later in the day because going to sleep hungry can be a nightmare. This will give you a lot of the benefits, but without having to stick to a rigid schedule throughout the week.
  • The Warrior Diet: This is the manliest of the manly. Back in the early days of man, you had to hunt all day in the hopes of a dinner that included some protein. That is what you are going to replicate here. One massive meal at the end of the day. You’ll have a 3 hour window to eat, if you like, though. A small amount of fruits and veggies throughout the day can get you through, but the only time you have any real sustenance should be at your end of the day meal. Lots of protein, lots of nutrients.

Choosing One

Choosing the best diet for you is up to you alone. None of these options are bad for men and really it all comes down to your daily schedule. Choose one that works around your own needs and stick to it. If you stay on one of these diets, I can assure you that fat will start falling off and you will feel stronger than ever.

Glycemic Index Diet – Is It Worth Looking Into?

Scientific research into diets can be almost impossible to understand. I have tried to read the studies backing up various diets and, to be honest, I rarely have a 100% understanding. Things like “biohacking” have led to the growth of diets that are showing results, but you never quite know why. The glycemic index diet, on the other hand, is one that makes sense, is easy to understand, and I think that it gives results that are almost unbelievable.

What Is The Glycemic Index?

low-gi-dietThe Glycemic Index is a way that foods are measured. The measurement is based off of their ability to raise blood sugar levels on a short term basis. Glucose itself is set at 100. Everything else is measured in comparison to that. Glucose is digested the fastest, so foods that are closer to 100 digest faster than those that are closer to 0. A GI diet works to take advantage of that.

The Glycemic Index is one of the things that is important to diabetics. Regulating blood sugar is much easier when you know the kinds of foods that you are eating and whether or not they will force you to take an extra dose of insulin. Too many blood sugar spikes from refined sugars create the insulin resistance that leads to diabetes in the first place. Low GI foods solve that instantly.

How Does A Glycemic Index Diet Work?

Tim Ferris made the Slow Carb Diet popular with his book “The 4 Hour Body.” Can you guess what are classified as “slow carb”? You got it, any food that is low on the Glycemic Index. The idea is that you will be providing your body with a steady, mild flow of energy. A spike in blood sugar levels will cause your body to release insulin, which contributes to fat storage. Take care of the insulin spikes and you will take care of the fat problem. Makes sense, right? Part of the diet that also helps you lose a lot of weight is the focus on whole foods. Eating healthy, natural foods will help anyone lose weight, but the combination of that with slow digesting carbs is unstoppable.

What Can You Eat?

Basically, anything that is low on the Glycemic Index. This includes things like:

  • Oatmeal
  • Brown Rice
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • 100% Whole Grain Bread
  • Nuts
  • Legumes

The complex carbohydrates above are the most important part of the diet. Making that move alone helped me see huge benefits. Besides carbohydrates, though, you should also be making the switch to healthier options overall. Grass fed beef, eggs, fresh vegetables, and chicken should all be a part of your daily diet.

What Should You Stay Away From?

Anything high on the index. If you live off of microwaved foods, you probably have way too many of these in your diet. Things like:

  • White Bread
  • White Rice
  • Bagels
  • Potatoes
  • Extruded Breakfast Cereal
  • Ice Cream
  • Potato Chips

If you want to take this a step further, you could stay away from even relatives of some of these. For instance, staying away from grain completely could improve your results, but for many people giving up white bread is enough to help them reach their goals.Glycemic-index

Does It Work?

Yes, amazingly. Carbohydrates are, for many people, the single largest problem that they face when on a diet. I know I can’t just have sweet potatoes with dinner, I crave Coca Cola, white bread, mashed potatoes, and any other carb you can think of.

low-glycemic-index-dietAfter a couple of weeks on a diet that relies on low GI foods, 10-15 pounds a month is easy. There are a lot of diets that focus on low carbohydrate meals, but by eating a diet similar to Atkins, and including complex carbohydrates, you will exponentially increase the fat loss by adding in foods that provide steady energy boosts that burn fat like nothing else.

Is There A Risk?

The only risk that you face with a low GI diet is the possibility that you will overeat and still gain weight. Overdoing it with any kind of food will eventually cause you to gain weight. With that exception, there is no reason that a glycemic diet should cause you any health problems.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line when it comes to a low glycemic diet is the fact that you are essentially making the switch to a healthier diet overall. By taking care of the primary problem that many people have, you are taking a huge step in the right direction. Call it what you will, but by switching to whole grains and eating more vegetables and lean meat, you can truly lose a lot of weight. Exercise is always going to be important, but diet alone can give you a lot of help and will make you feel better throughout the day. A low glycemic diet will give you a longer lasting surge of energy, rather than the rush that refined sugar gives you that is always quickly followed by a crash.
