Detox Diet Cleanse – Do You Really Need One?

detox-diet-cleanseOver my lifetime, I’ve indulged myself in lots of unhealthy eating. Well, I should clarify. That’s an understatement.  I’ve done the grapefruit diet, the Sacred Heart diet and the Lemonade diet popularized by Beyonce Knowles just to name a few. Though you may find this hard to believe, these diets did a lot damage to my health  and, as you’ve probably experienced, even though I finally switched to making healthier food choices the negative effects lingered for a long time after being on diets like those. Many people think, and I have reason to believe them, that toxins found in your food can build up in your body and cause negative side effects that you have to cleanse out before you can really get the benefits of your new found healthy diet. A lot of people recommend various lemon water sort of cleanses similar to the lemonade diet, but I’m going to show you an easier to follow type of cleanse.

What Is A Cleanse?

detox-dietCleanses are special diets that is get rid of anything lingering around inside your body. Your colon, intestines, and more all retain toxins from unhealthy, over processed foods. If you eat a lot of processed foods, you can end up feeling tired, sick, and depressed. Limiting your food intake to only certain products for even a short period of time will solve that. Dr. Oz recommends just a short, 48 hour cleanse which will give good results.

Normally, however, a cleanse can last anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks. This depends on what other kind of foods you are taking in, though. If you are limiting yourself to juices, 3 days is sometimes all that your body will be able to tolerate. The kind of cleanse that I recommend is a basic version that lasts for 7 days and still allows you to eat solid food, albeit strictly healthy ones.

After a cleanse of any length, however, you will surely have more energy, feel happier and be somewhat thinner. The first time I did a raw food cleanse I was craving soda by the third day but once the energetic feeling hit me, I convinced myself that it was for the better if I kept going.

7-Day Detox

What To Eat

  • 7-day-detox-dietFruit: fresh or frozen-unsweetened, natural juice
  • Vegetables: vegetables are the most important part! – broccoli, cauliflower, onions, garlic, artichokes, kale, collard greens – No corn!
  • Beans: lentils, green peas
  • Nuts/Seeds: almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, hemp seeds, peanuts
  • Oils: ONLY COLD PRESSED, RAW – Hemp oil, flax oil, almond oil, coconut oil

What Not To Eat

  • Dairy: milk, cheese, sour cream
  • Wheat: pasta, bread
  • Sweeteners: refined sugar, artificial sweeteners
  • Gluten: wheat, barley, bran, rye
  • Soy: soy milk, tofu, tempeh
  • Beverages: coffee, soda, tea

Sample Meal Plan

  • 8am – Wake up and have a glass of water with lemon juice
  • 8:30am – Breakfast: Smoothie made with fresh berries, kale, hemp oil
  • 12pm – Lunch: Salad made with lettuce, hemp seeds, flax oil dressing, cucumbers, onions
  • 4pm – Snack: A handful of raw almonds with a smoothie

That seems pretty basic, and it is, but these all natural foods are going to flush out your body like nothing else. The kale shakes are going to do a lot for your bowel movements! Trust me on that one! If you want something that will really give you a massive amount of weight loss, take a look at the one I’m going to give you next.

Want Something More Intense?

If that wasn’t enough for you there is a great detox diet that you can use for 3-5 days and see a huge improvement in your health. With this, though, you are going to be relying only on smoothies, so you have to be prepared to not eat whole food for a couple of days. I would have never dreamed of it back when I was addicted to food the way I was. If you feel like me, this is also a great way to get over that addiction.

Try these recipes for Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner:

Raspberry/Spinach

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp flax seed
  • 1 cup raspberries
  • 1 banana
  • 1/4 cup spinach
  • 1 tbsp almond butter
  • 2 tsp lemon

The Kale:

  • 4 Celery Stalks
  • 1 Cucumber
  • 1 Cup kale leaves
  • 1/2 green apple
  • 1/2 lime
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1 cup pineapple

Mango/Blueberry

  • 1/2 cup mango
  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 1 1/2 coconut water
  • 1 cup kale
  • 1 tbsp lemon
  • 1/4 avocado
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tbsp flax seeds

Other than these three shakes, you should not be eating anything solid. If you are thirsty, drink water, if you are hungry, tough it out. In the morning, though, you can have a cup of Detox Tea that is made from green tea and lemon. The green tea will help boost your weight loss success. A study found that a 25% metabolism boost is easy when you use green tea.

Whether you choose the easy path or the more difficult one, either detox diet will clean you out and give you a new kind of energy that you haven’t felt before. It isn’t easy to make drastic changes in your diet like called for with theser, but the trouble is worth it. Trust me, give a week of your life to doing a detox diet and you’ll be glad you did. I can promise that much.
