It is typically advertised as a laxative which becomes activated when put into water. Because these different forms contain various different products, the nutritional data for each of them is different.

Aside from being the best, non-habit forming laxative on the market today, Metamucil has many other health benefits. Many people do not know that they can use it to help with their weight loss plan.

Research participants who were consuming a low calorie diet and had an increase in their daily fiber reported feeling fuller after eating a meal. After being instructed to increase their daily fiber intake by just 14 grams per day, these participants were able to decrease their daily caloric consumption by about 10%. This kind of dramatic result was quite a surprise to them because they felt it could ultimately lead to a significant loss of weight over a reasonably long period of time. It should be noted that the American Heart Association recommends that everyone consume between 25 and 30 grams of fiber each day in order to promote optimum health. They also say that people who increase their daily fiber intake to about 25 grams or more could dramatically reduce their obesity rates.

Metamucil has very few calories. Each fiber capsule has only 2 calories. As stated above, the wafers contain more calories at 120 each. But these wafers can be used as a high fiber, low calorie snack if you are having a lot of cravings in between meals.

According to the Federal Drug Administration, any food which contains fewer than forty calories per serving can be labelled a low calorie food. All of the Metamucil products fall into this category. So, aside from helping you lose weight, they will also be helping you an adequate amount of fiber in your diet each day.

People who have taken Metamucil as a way to help with their weight loss goals often report a tremendous sense of fullness. Some experience some bloating and/or abdominal pain. Some people who are already sensitive to wheat products have reported having an allergic reaction to psyllium. Despite these issues, Metamucil is considered to be a safe product with the ability to help people lose weight.

Take one full glass of Metamucil before each meal. It is not possible to overdose on Metamucil so you can also take a glass in between meals if you are feeling hungry. When you are using this product, however, please note that you will probably be making many trips to the washroom. This will decrease as your body adjusts to the added fiber you are giving it.
