Top 5 Smoothies For Weight Loss

Why Smoothies?

healthy-smoothiesSmoothies are one of the best ways to get all of your nutrients into the day without having to stress over it. Berries, vegetables, protein, and everything else is a part of a healthy diet, but who has the time to fit everything into the day? I used to wonder how anyone could get the nutrients to lose weight, unless they were eating nothing but berries all day.

Smoothies let you get plenty of vitamins and nutrients in without having to actually eat them. You can even replace a meal a day with a smoothie and lose a massive amount of weight. The idea is that you take several ingredients, even ones that you might not usually eat, and combine them into one drink that tastes great and is even better for you.

Here, I’m going to show you my five absolute favorite smoothies, but I’ll also give you some tips on bonus ingredients to make sure that you reach your goals.

The Top Five:

  1. weight-loss-smoothieBanana Raspberry
    • 1 cup raspberries
    • 1 large peeled banana
    • 2 1/2 cups of spinach
    • 2 teaspoons of chia seeds
    • 5 oz of clean, filtered water
    • 1/2 scoop unflavored protein
  2. Mango-Peach
    • 2 small mangoes/1 large
    • 1 pitted peach
    • 1 cup of fresh spinach
    • 5oz fresh water
  3. Berry Protein
    • 1 cup spinach
    • 1 cup of vanilla almond milk
    • 1 cup mixed berries (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries)
    • 1 scoop of whey protein powder (20g protein)
    • 1 tablespoon of flaxseed
    • 1 teaspoon of honey
  4. Almond Butter Power
    • 1 cup of vanilla almond milk
    • 1/2 cup of water and 7-8 ice cubes
    • 2 tablespoons of almond butter (or peanut butter if it is organic)
    • 1 scoop of whey protein (20g protein)
    • 1 banana
    • 1 teaspoon of honey
  5. Peanut Butter and Banana Heaven (THIS IS MY FAVORITE)
    • 1 whole banana
    • 1/2 cup smooth organic peanut butter
    • 1/2 cup of whole milk
    • 7-8 ice cubes
    • 1 scoop chocolate whey protein (20-30grams)

Bonus Tips:

  • Limit the fat content of your smoothies. A small amount of healthy fat can help you lose weight and keep you full, but it is tempting to add too much. Even the healthiest fats will give you gas and indigestion in high doses. A 2-3 tablespoons of a fat will be enough.
  • Avoid excess sweeteners! This is a big NO NO. There are plenty of natural sweeteners in fruits, vegetables, and nuts. You don’t have to add any more. Doing so will only stop your weight loss. The first smoothies that I made were basically healthier milkshakes. A teaspoon of honey won’t have too much of an impact, but anything more can be a problem.
  • Keep packaged foods out of your smoothies. These are technically the same foods, but they’re filled with sugars and preservatives that practically destroy any benefit that you would get from them in the first place. Fruit juices fall into this category as well. If you want to use juice in your smoothies, add them in after you have made them with a juicer. Orange juice is great for your smoothies, but store bought brands have very little in common with the homemade counterpart.
  • Don’t rely on this alone for weight loss. Adding smoothies to your diet can have a big impact on weight loss, but they shouldn’t be your only method. There is no replacement for diet and exercise, although there are certainly things that can help.

The Master Ingredient List

Here is a list of everything that you should make sure to include in smoothies if you are just getting started, including things that you can add to the ones that I’ve already listed.

  • smoothies-for-weight-lossBerries: Any berry will do. Raspberry, blueberry, blackberry. Lots of fiber and lots of antioxidants.
  • Cayenne Pepper: Shoots your metabolism through the roof. It will heat your body up and keep you burning fat. Be careful, though, it is easy to add too much.
  • Healthy Fat: Coconut oil, nut butters, and avocado will all give you a dose of healthy fats that will slow down digestion, keep you full for longer, and prevent any insulin spikes that might come from the sugars in the fruit.
  • Leafy Greens: Kale, spinach, lettuce. These are low in calories, but high in nutrients. These will help keep your digestive system moving and keep you feeling great.
  • Greek Yogurt: Greek yogurt has a lot of protein and will fill you up with protein and probiotics.

Getting Started

That should be enough to get you started. Smoothies are delicious and one of the single greatest ways to add more vitamins and minerals into your diet. Try a few of the recipes I listed, experiment with other ingredients, and find what works best for you. Remember, if you are trying to lose weight you need to make sure that you don’t drink several smoothies a day while eating a regular diet. These are meant to replace meals, not add to them. A breakfast smoothie is a great way to start your day and a lunch one can help you avoid eating out and getting distracted from your workday. No matter what you choose to do, you’ll see results as long as you do it right.
