Is the Yoplait Diet Plan Worth a Shot?

Everyone loves a cup of Yoplait yogurt. I know I used to love several cups a day. Blueberry to be exact. I had to cut out yogurt a while back because I couldn’t stay away from the sugar filled incarnations, but there is a diet now that uses yogurt in a way that will help you lose a good bit of weight in a short amount of time. It is a “tune up” kind of diet that will get you back on track, give you a boost, or just jump-start your new healthy lifestyle. In any case, I’ve got some information on it to share with you. This is by far one of the tastiest diets I’ve seen.

The Basics

What Is It?

yoplait-diet-meal-planThe Yoplait diet plan was originally just a marketing tool for the company, but it really does have a powerful impact on weight loss. The idea is to include healthy amounts of Yoplait yogurt in each meal. It was meant to prove the healthy attributes of the product, which it truly does after you get done.

It breaks down to 30% protein, 45% carbohydrates, and 25% fat. You can do that with meals like this:

  • Breakfast: 6oz yogurt with one serving of whole grains (oatmeal)
  • Lunch: Same as breakfast, but you can have a smoothie instead with the same amount of yogurt
  • Dinner: 6oz of lean meat (like grass fed beef), one serving of fat (butter), two servings of vegetables (brussels sprouts)

That might not seem like a lot of food, but it is all very nutrient dense. Part of the advantage of eating healthy foods is that you get much more nutrition from a smaller amount of food. Psychologically, this can be hard because you feel like you are eating less food, but you are in fact getting an incredibly large amount of vitamins and nutrients in your daily life. This was one of the biggest problems that I ran into. I can eat as healthy as humanly possible, but a couple of hours later I just want to have something delicious.

How Long Does It Last?

2-week-tune-upThey call it the “Two Week Tune Up.” As the name would suggest, it lasts for two weeks. You could, of course, do it for longer, but the way it is supposed to function relies on this short “tune up” period that will help your weight loss journey. More won’t provide the same level of weight loss, but it is possible to continue losing smaller amounts of weight. If you would like to try the Yoplait diet once every few months, you would be much better off than trying to stick with it for an entire month.

How Much Can You Lose?

Plenty, off course, because you are relying on a diet that is about 1,2000 calories each day. That works out to about 2.5 pounds a week through diet alone. If you have stalled your weight loss on your current diet, this is an easy way to knock out another five pounds.

If you continue past the two week mark, you could theoretically lose about that same amount for a few months to come, although it might begin to be hard to stick to. If you do then it is possible to lose as much as 10 pounds a month for at least the near future.

Science to Back it Up?

Yep. A study in 2003 found that those on a high yogurt diet lost more weight than those on a traditional healthy diet. In fact, they also kept more of their muscle mass, while losing 80% more fat off of their abdomen than others. That is one of the hardest places to lose weight from, and a place that many people never succeed in.

The Pros

  • yoplait-yogurtStructured plan that doesn’t cost any money
  • Everything available from a local grocery store
  • Over 30 flavors to choose from make it easy to find a great option
  • Two weeks of this will train you to overcome food addictions and plan out your meals
  • The perfect macro-nutrient ratios

The Cons

  • Getting bored of a diet is easy, but when it involves this much yogurt it can be even easier, especially if you aren’t a big fan.
  • The protein found in dinner alone can be hard on you if you normally have protein throughout the day. This is also true if you have a medical condition that requires higher levels of protein.
  • Not much variety between Breakfast and Lunch. Although, sucha routine works for the best for some people, since they get into a habit and follow it on a consistent basis.
  • The low calorie content can make it hard to exercise while you are on this diet. If you are going to be exercising, you’ll have to rely on something very low impact, or else take a two week break.

All in all, a tune up diet like this is a great way to mix things up. The Yoplait diet only lasts for two weeks, after all. This might not be the kind of lifestyle change that you would like to make for years to come, but a break from your normal routine can be exactly what you need to get back on track. Weight loss journeys can be long and stressful processes, so it’s good to have a boost or two along the way. Try it out, the worst thing that could happen is that you only lose a couple of pounds.
